Free Internet – Mobile Wireless Internet Access

by on Apr.02, 2010, under Computer Wiz - Blog

Free Internet for iBurst customers- Mobile Wireless Internet Access.

iBurst launches three month trial for free Internet after midnight.

Broadband provider introduces a free three-month trial for current iBurst Wireless subscribers. iBurst is to launch free Internet access between midnight and 8am to active iBurst Wireless customers during a three month trial to start 1 April 2010.

The trial is open to both contract and month-to-month subscribers on all iBurst Wireless packages. Subscribers will be able to use the Internet freely between midnight and 8am, with all traffic being zero-rated and therefore not counting towards their monthly bandwidth allocation.

Having free Internet access at these late hours is extremely useful to people synchronizing their online backups, doing large file transfers or for late-night surfing sessions.

This service is initially being introduced as a free trial to ensure that iBurst can ensure a good customer experience and to test market viability before officially launching it as a value added service, set for July this year.

“We are always looking for ways to improve the affordability and accessibility of our broadband products,” says iBurst CEO Jannie van Zyl. “This is a value add for people who are online late at night. With many users performing specific functions at this time, we felt there was an opportunity to reduce the cost of access even more for our customers and give them unmatched value in the wireless broadband space. Already the most cost effective wireless broadband provider, iBurst is working hard to deliver cheaper, better solutions to those who don’t have access to wireline systems.”

The “After Hours” free Internet service will give iBurst Wireless subscribers an uncapped experience after midnight to allow them to do batch uploads or downloads, backups, late night surfing or gaming sessions. This is the first of a number of initiatives from iBurst in the next three months that will see the broadband provider launching even more services to provide wireless Internet services at wireline-like pricing. In addition, exciting new wire-line services are on the cards.

“iBurst has consistently differentiated itself in the wireless space by bringing its pricing down to stay in line with wireline technologies. We want to set our price, and how we deliver the services, so that it is easier to compare iBurst wireless with the fixed line services, although our true competitors in this space are the mobile carriers with 3G,” says van Zyl.

iBurst provides free internet access to existing mobile wireless iBurst customers during early hours of the morning.

Computer Wiz has tried to notify  as many customers as possible via email to benefit from the free internet service currently offered by iBurst.

iBurst Cape Town

by on Mar.03, 2010, under Computer Wiz - Blog

Do you require iBurst in Cape Town,  a wireless broadband solution available in South AFRICA ?

How is my bandwidth measured ?

Bandwidth is measured by counting all packet traffic originating from & destined to the session IP address of your connection. Bandwidth consumption is measured by counting all packet traffic originating from and destined to the session IP address of your connection.
This consumption is session based and is only reflected on the bandwidth monitor once a session is closed, meaning that if the session lasts over several days it will only be reflected on the bandwidth consumption monitor on the day the session is disconnected.
The traffic measured includes retransmitted packets and packets dropped (eg by firewalls and antivirus programs on subscribers computer). We are currently unable to exclude or isolate such traffic from the counters. However the measurement of consumption is conservative and we tend to err to the benefit of subscribers in the algorithms used.
Furthermore, once the consumption quota has been reached we allow for a small amount of grace usage before throttling a connection. Please note that traffic generated unbeknown to subscribers such as spyware and virus traffic will be accumulated towards subscribers bandwidth consumption.
It is advised that appropriate measures (such as antivirus, firewalls etc) are used to ensure that your systems are securely maintained. To correlate traffic consumption with the monitors available, it will be useful to use a session based monitor such as Magitime, which is freely downloadable on the Internet.
What affects the signal of my iBurst wireless connection ?
Good Locations
  • Areas that aren’t too built up or dense in other words close to window with not too many trees in the way, not on the floor, rather a window sill.
Bad Locations
  • Electrified fencing – If signal goes through elecritified fencing the signal can deteriorate.
  • Tennis court fencing – Signal going through tennis court fencing to your base station can deteriorate throughput.
  • Dense tree growth – If in line with your base station, can deteriorate signal.
  • Burglar proofing – Can cause your signal to deteriorate. Place device antenna past the steel bars.
  • Walls – Walls bounce signal. Try to place the device to have a clear line to the base station.
  • Window tinting – Certain types of window tinting deteriorate signal quality.
  • Security gates – If working in a office with a security gate the bars may deteriorate the signal quality.
  • Steel window blinds – They can reflect your signal. Open them to improve signal.

What operating system works with iBurst ?

The iBurst system works with:
  • Windows XP
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows Vista
  • Apple Mac version X or later
  • Linux

What ports are restricted on the iBurst Network ?

  • Due to excessive DoS attacks and worm traffic, the following ports will be restricted:
  • tcp 445, 135, 139, 1433, 1434; udp 1433, 1434.
  • Furthermore, peer to peer traffic is shaped on most iBurst packages.
  • SMTP relaying on  port TCP 25 is restricted to authorised SMTP relays only.
