Internet ? Yes you have reached your destination by coming to Computer Wiz. We can help you connect to the internet by offering you internet access.

What is the best Internet ?

That depends on your physical location.

How do you define the Internet for my requirements ? A fast reliable broadband connection be it fixed line or wireless.

Internet and email are basic telecommunication requirements used by the majority of consumers today.

Broadband Explained

Broadband is simply a better way to access the Internet and you don’t have to re-connect each time, as you do with a dial-up connection.

You can choose between

  • Broadband at home, which uses the phone line to your house without interfering with your telephone conversations. We call it iBurst or ADSL or 3G Broadband
  • Mobile Broadband, which works the way a mobile phone does, for people on the move using a laptop

Why Broadband?

For loads of reasons!

  • It keeps your phone line free, so you can surf the Internet and talk on the phone at the same time. There’s no need for a second line
  • It’s always on – there’s no wait to get online as there is no dialling up
  • It’s a whole new online experience – you can shop and bank online easily, buy music and games, email large attachments, watch music and film clips from your computer and much more

Why iBurst or ADSL Broadband?

There are loads of reasons to get iBurst or ADSL as a Broadband , our helpdesk is available to help you should you have a problem.

  • Cost
  • Setup easy
  • support

How is broadband different to dial-up?

  • The term broadband usage, (when you’re referring to the monthly allowance of a Telecom Internet plan), is measured in the amount of data that you use (how many megabytes (MB) you download and upload). In comparison, dial-up usage is measured in the time you spend on the Internet (how many minutes you are connected)
  • Your broadband data allowance can only be used on your own broadband connection. This means that you cannot use your Xtra Username and Password on someone else’s broadband connection to use your broadband data allowance. On the other hand, you can do this with the dial-up time you have allocated on your dial-up plan
  • If you go over your broadband monthly data allowance you will either be charged for every additional MB you use or the speed that you access the Internet may be slowed down to close to dial-up speed, depending on which Broadband plan you have. If you use up all of the time allocated for your dial-up connection you will be charged an additional $2.50 for every hour you go over your monthly time allowance
  • With broadband, Internet pages will generally load quicker and is great for watching video and listening to audio online. A dial-up connection is generally too slow to watch video or listen to audio online
  • With dial-up you need to dial-in every time you want to connect to the Internet whereas with broadband there is no need to dial-in when you want to connect
  • With broadband you can use the Internet and talk on your landline phone at the same time. With dial-up you can either use the Internet or talk on the phone but you cannot do both at the same time
  • With a wireless broadband modem from Telecom, up to four computers can connect to the Internet at the same time.

Speed and Data

Video and sound contain more electronic information (data) than a small picture or an online page of writing. The speed of broadband is measured by how much data is transferred in a second. Broadband pricing plans are based on the data cap of each plan.

Modems and Equipment

For broadband at home you need a small piece of equipment called a broadband modem. It plugs into a phone jack and you connect your computer to it. The modem changes your computer’s Internet and email information to and from the broadband format. When you order a modem – it comes with a self-install kit that guides you through installation.

For mobile broadband you’ll need a data device (modem or data card) that plugs into your laptop, so your laptop can send and receive information as a mobile phone does

iBurst Cape Town

by on Mar.03, 2010, under Computer Wiz - Blog

Do you require iBurst in Cape Town,  a wireless broadband solution available in South AFRICA ?

How is my bandwidth measured ?

Bandwidth is measured by counting all packet traffic originating from & destined to the session IP address of your connection. Bandwidth consumption is measured by counting all packet traffic originating from and destined to the session IP address of your connection.
This consumption is session based and is only reflected on the bandwidth monitor once a session is closed, meaning that if the session lasts over several days it will only be reflected on the bandwidth consumption monitor on the day the session is disconnected.
The traffic measured includes retransmitted packets and packets dropped (eg by firewalls and antivirus programs on subscribers computer). We are currently unable to exclude or isolate such traffic from the counters. However the measurement of consumption is conservative and we tend to err to the benefit of subscribers in the algorithms used.
Furthermore, once the consumption quota has been reached we allow for a small amount of grace usage before throttling a connection. Please note that traffic generated unbeknown to subscribers such as spyware and virus traffic will be accumulated towards subscribers bandwidth consumption.
It is advised that appropriate measures (such as antivirus, firewalls etc) are used to ensure that your systems are securely maintained. To correlate traffic consumption with the monitors available, it will be useful to use a session based monitor such as Magitime, which is freely downloadable on the Internet.
What affects the signal of my iBurst wireless connection ?
Good Locations
  • Areas that aren’t too built up or dense in other words close to window with not too many trees in the way, not on the floor, rather a window sill.
Bad Locations
  • Electrified fencing – If signal goes through elecritified fencing the signal can deteriorate.
  • Tennis court fencing – Signal going through tennis court fencing to your base station can deteriorate throughput.
  • Dense tree growth – If in line with your base station, can deteriorate signal.
  • Burglar proofing – Can cause your signal to deteriorate. Place device antenna past the steel bars.
  • Walls – Walls bounce signal. Try to place the device to have a clear line to the base station.
  • Window tinting – Certain types of window tinting deteriorate signal quality.
  • Security gates – If working in a office with a security gate the bars may deteriorate the signal quality.
  • Steel window blinds – They can reflect your signal. Open them to improve signal.

What operating system works with iBurst ?

The iBurst system works with:
  • Windows XP
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows Vista
  • Apple Mac version X or later
  • Linux

What ports are restricted on the iBurst Network ?

  • Due to excessive DoS attacks and worm traffic, the following ports will be restricted:
  • tcp 445, 135, 139, 1433, 1434; udp 1433, 1434.
  • Furthermore, peer to peer traffic is shaped on most iBurst packages.
  • SMTP relaying on  port TCP 25 is restricted to authorised SMTP relays only.

Which areas does Computer Wiz provide iBurst to you may ask.

  • Port Elizabeth
  • Cape Town
  • Bloemfontein
  • Johannesburg
  • Gauteng
  • Pretoria
  • Durban
  • Vaal Triangle
